Marble Counters: In Burnsville and Beyond

Posted by & filed under Marble Countertops.

Today, we here at Minneapolis Granite are going to give you a little history lesson in one of our favorite subjects: marble counters. We fabricate and install custom marble counters; Burnsville is just one of the many areas we serve in and around the Twin Cities. But we wanted to take it a step further and tell you more about marble and its illustrious history.

Humankind has been using marble in its architecture for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures. The Athenian Treasury, which was built in the sixth century BC, was the first building ever made entirely of marble. Some other famous ancient marble structures include the floor of the basilica of St. Paul in Rome, the walls of the Palace of Versailles, the Duomo in Florence and the Taj Mahal in India. One of the most famous marble buildings ever, the Parthenon, has marble columns that could be seen by incoming ships miles away. To this day, the Parthenon still stands, as do many other ancient marble buildings. This is a true testament to the strength and timelessness of marble. (Just think of how long marble counters could last in your Burnsville home!)

The word “marble” comes from the Greek word marmaros, which means “a snow white and spotless stone.” However, this is a misnomer. Marble comes in a wide variety of colors – just about every color in the rainbow, actually! So finding the perfect color for your new marble counters in your Burnsville home will be easy!

Marble has also been used throughout history as the medium of choice for some of the world’s best sculptors. For example, Michelangelo carved his famous David from one block of marble. It’s funny to think that your new marble counters in your Burnsville home are made of the same material as Michelangelo’s David!

And in today’s world – in Burnsville and beyond – marble can be affordable, versatile and less cumbersome. It is commonly used to make bathtubs, marble counters, countertops, whirlpools and fireplace mantels and surrounds. It comes in a variety of colors and adds a look of elegance and luxury to any Burnsville home.
